Back To Business focuses on the tenacity of people in war zones, forced to rebuild after yet another war. With limited resources, they try persistently to get back on their feet. I visualized this by recreating these bullet-riddled shutters and covering the holes with empty bullet casings that were made into rectangular plates. Although these shutters can be used again, the gold-colored scars will remind their owners of a very dark past, not so long ago.
These first 6 shutters were made from bullet-riddled metal plates that I collected in Mosul, Iraq in April 2021. The residents are slowly rebuilding the city in the wake of the catastrophic battle that took place in 2017 that claimed more than 10,000 civilian lives. The patterns and color combinations are inspired by the original designs seen during my previous visits.
